How does Laser Hair removal work?

The light from the laser seeks out pigment. When the laser is fired into the skin, it seeks out the pigment in the hair follicle, travels through the shaft of the hair under the skin and ends the hair at its root, effectively stopping or reducing hair growth in the treated area.

The laser can only end the hair follicles that are currently in an active (Anagen) stage of growth, which at any given time is around 10-20% of your hair. This is why several treatments are required to reduce hair growth.

The hair regrowth cycle for the face is 4-6 weeks long and for the body is 6-8 weeks long, so we retreat the area according to those timelines.

What areas of the body can be treated and how long does it take?

We can safely treat all areas of the body, including face, underarms, back, chest, arms, fingers, legs, feet, toes and bikini Brazilian areas.

Most areas of the body can be treated in less than an hour.

Smaller areas such as face or underarms can be treated in less than 30 mins.

Is it much more costly than other methods, such as waxing or electrolysis?

Laser hair removal is NOT more expensive than many other methods, especially when you factor in the value of your time.

There is an up-front cost for a series of laser treatments – but you quickly get a return on your investment when you consider that 5-10 laser treatments will long-lastingly reduce most of the hair regrowth, while the costs of waxing will continue every 4-6 weeks indefinitely.

Electrolysis is long-lasting as well, but treatments are costly, uncomfortable and take a very long time to perform (the needle is inserted into each individual hair).

Who cannot receive laser hair removal?

Anyone who is pregnant, taking medications that cause photo sensitivity, or with recent prolonged sun or tanning bed exposure cannot safely receive laser treatments.

Does the laser treatment hurt?

Not really, the treatment is VERY comfortable. You will feel a mild, hot, pinching or snapping sensation as the laser pulses onto the skin, but this is very quick and almost always easily tolerated. No numbing cream is needed and we also use other methods to help keep the treatment comfortable, such as ice packs and cryo machines that blow very cold air onto the skin during treatment.

What is the difference between laser and IPL hair removal and why is there a price difference?

People often mistake laser and IPL for being the same. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is fantastic technology for treating skin concerns such as pigmentation (sun damage, age spots, freckles) and fine blood vessels/Rosacea. When it comes to hair removal, though, IPL is NOT the safest or most effective technology.

IPL is NOT a laser. The machines use a specialized light bulb and cannot be focused to a concentrated beam. Because of their more shallow depth of penetration, only some of these machines will be effective for hair reduction as they cannot reach the deeper follicles.

They are also much more dangerous for darker skin types and tanned skin and this is typically where people have encountered burn marks and hyper-pigmentation (dark squares) on their skin post treatment.

The cost of an actual Laser treatment vs IPL is higher, however, different factors need to be taken into account:

  • the effectiveness of the treatment (laser is MUCH MORE effective than IPL, which can often just stun the follicles and slow hair regrowth, instead of long-lastingly ending the follicle)
  • the cost of the machines (purchasing a laser machine is MUCH more expensive than an IPL);

While some beauty salons and group deals can offer IPL treatments at a much lower cost, please consider that outdated equipment and incorrect technician use of IPL and lasers can result in long-lasting damage to your skin. Always make an informed decision and find out what kind of equipment is being used and how much experience the technician has before purchasing any laser treatment.
